Mountain biking carries various disciplines, however, many novice bikers have one track mind when they start biking. Even if they know about these categories, they often cloud not tell the difference.
These disciplines are altogether different and each requires a specific bike of certain features. As a rider, it is beneficial to know on what trek you want to ride.

Different Disciplines of Mountain Biking
Most of the times disciplines are divided into 5 different categorized. Here’s a little detail about each.
1. Cross Country Mountain Biking
This is the most common and original form of mountain bike riding. It involves cycling trough trails for a long time and requires great strength.
Cross country terrain greatly vary and it can be nearly any trail such as gravel, muddy, hard packed, soft from vegetation or rocky.
Choice of a Cross Country Bike also varies according to trails for this discipline. Conventionally, Hardtail Bikes with a single suspension system is considered best. Such Bikes can move quickly and it is easy to maneuver them.
2. Downhill Mountain Biking
As the name refers, such Downhill Mountain Biking is done on downhill trails which follows straight down.
Cyclists are either taken up via a lift or they walk a certain terrain. Bicycles are not used to ride up the mountain. After reaching a specific point, the rider flies down.
For such a riding discipline, aerodynamic bikes are required. Control and speed are the main factors involved in such rides.
Rear shocks, metal springs, and high suspension make the ride comfy and put the rider in complete control.
3. Enduro Mountain Biking or All Mountain
Enduro Mountain Biking is done on the nature trail. It is somewhat action-packed riding with challenging obstacles. Natural features of the mountain like jumps and drops help the cyclist.
Full Suspension Bikes are used for such type of riding. As compared to the front suspension, the rear has more travel. The needed rear suspension is 130mm to 170mm due to drops and big jumps.
4. Dirt Jumping
This type of mountain biking is done in a dirt park. This sport challenges the skills of a rider. Dirt Jumping is all about air movement and tricks. Ramps of various heights and steepness are used.
Dirt jumping requires bikes with simple designs that can let riders perform aerial tricks. Most bicycles have a disc brake system and a single gear. To absorb landing shock, the front suspension is kept high.
5. Free Ride Mountain Biking
Free Riding is a flexible discipline. This is closely connected with dirt jumping and Downhill Biking. It is a mixture of mountain biking and aerial tricks.
Cyclists don’t follow any rules and let their creativity take charge. Riders perform while crossing obstacles on natural terrain.
Freeride bikes are somewhat similar to dirt jumping bikes. These are lightweight with the minimum 170mm suspension to absorb drop shocks. Such bikes are simple and offer stability and control to riders.
